Serene and beautifully detailed The rooms walls are upholstered with a serene green and terracotta French toile which recall Beaufort’s descent from French Hugenots.
Dr Beaufort admired the elegance of new rooms at Ballyfin and today the tradition of stylishness is continued in tht decoration. Between the winders is a mid -eighteenth-century mahogany bureau bookcase with a swan neck pediment, finley terminated with carved rosettes, and rocaille finial. The bedroom opens onto a balcony, overlooking a small private garden with views also to the lake.
The room is named for the Rev Dr Daniel Augustus Beaufort who was an 18th century parson -scholar and spent much time at Ballyfin as a guest of the Pole family while he was Rector of the nearby town of Mountrath. His son Admiral Francis Beaufort gave his name to the Beaufort Windscale and to the Beaufort Sea indicating the widespread connections with this quiet corner of Ireland in times past. The Beauforts descent from French Huguenots, whose expulsion from France and migration to Ireland at teh end of the seventeenth century not only led to the establishment of a vibrant community in nearby Portarlington, but also was instrumental to the successful development of the Irish linen industry
