The Butler

This handsome room overlooks the lake.

Originally the bedchamber of Lady Caroline Coote’s private suite, this handsome room overlooking the lake, with its dramatic red wallpaper has now been restored to its original proportions.

Many of the furnishings are Georgian. The space between the windows, for example, is filled by a fine George II secretaire in pale mahogany with a ‘swan neck’ pediment. On each side of the bed are striking mezzotints by Thomas Frye, a leading Irish-born artist of remarkable originality.

The Butler Room lies in the north east corner of the house with views to the lake.

The Butler Room is named after James Butler, 1st Duke of Ormond (1610-88) whose portrait by William Wissing (1656-87) hangs in the room. The room lies in the north-east corner of the house out to the east over the front. In April 1642 after Irish rebels had plundered the town of Maryborough, royalist forces under the Earl of Ormond eventually brought relief to the beseiged fort. This was but a brief moment in the episodic career of the three times Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, James Butler. The room has been restored close to its original proportions. It later became part of the classroom accommodation when Ballyfin became a school.
