In the bedroom, above the black marble chimneypiece hangs Admiration, one of the finest surviving paintings by Richard Rothwell, who was born in the neighbouring county of Offaly. The fireplace below retains it richly ornamented cast-iron grate which is signed by Pat Kirk.

This bedroom is named in recognition of the association between the Coote Family and the town of Mountrath, located six kilometres south of Ballyfin. It was bought as a struggling and unprofitable plantation settlement by the 1st Baronet in 1626, but by 1659, having established weekly markets and a flourishing iron industry, it had become the most populated town in the county and in the following year would give its name to the earldom awarded to the 2nd Baronet for his part in the Restoration of Charles II. Through the eighteenth century successive Earls of Mountrath manged Irish estates from afar. When the 7th Earl died there, unmarried but leaving one illegitimate son, the baronetcy and his Irish estates, but not the earldom, passed to the young Charles Henry Coote, builder of Ballyfin.
