One of the most pleasingly elegant bedrooms at Ballyfin.
With its gracefully rococo stucco work ceiling, the Lady Caroline Coote Room (formerly Lady Coote’s boudoir) is among the most pleasingly elegant bedrooms at Ballyfin.
The decoration with a vivid, electric blue wallpaper transforms the room into a suggestive tent-like enclosure. It perfectly reflects the interest in textiles seen in interiors of the Empire period. The colour serves as an ideal foil for the early-Georgian portrait over the chimneypiece showing Henry Meredyth of Newtown, County Meath, by the Irish artist Charles Jerva.
The former Boudoir is the first room encountered at the head of the main stairs, placed here purposefully so that it was easily accessed by visitors. The room was designed as a self-indulgent space amongst the private chambers of Lady Caroline Coote. A boudoir, as the name implies, comes from the French tradition for the personal room of a woman, in some instances a bed chamber but essentially elaborating on the dressing room as the archetype of female space, a private sitting room, sometimes for public show on grand occasions and at other times for receiving personal friends. Remaining one of the most perfect evocations of the Empire Style to be found in any Irish interior. A detail of the ceiling decoration, showing billing turtle doves as a symbol of love and constancy appropriate for the kind of sentiment associated with the Boudoir
