The Maryborough

Located on the south-east corner of the house, the Maryborough Room is one of a pair of similarly planned rooms flanking the bowed south portico.

The Maryborough Room decoration shares the Chinoiserie theme employed throughout the adjoining suite, hung with some of the same eighteeenth-century Chinese wallpaper panels formerly in the Prince of Hanover's collection. Its application to this delightful room recalls the peerage granted in 1821 to one of the Ballyfin’s previous owners William Wellesley-Pole. The views from the room across the Pleasure Grounds are outstanding including. in the middle distance, the district of Clonenagh where the ruined mediveal parish church provided the final resting place for the Pole Family.

The Maryborough Room takes its name from the county town of Laois, itself named after Henry VIII’s daughter Mary.

The Maryborough was the name given to the settlement established in the Tudor period around a strategic site in the centre of the county, now identified with the county town of Port Laoise. As a military post in the defence of the pale it was originally known as Fort Protector. When the modern counties of Laois and Offaly wre shired in 1556, they were named respectively as Queens and Kings County for Henry VIII's daughter Mary Tudor, and her husband, Philip of Spain, and as the governement of the newly shired county established themselves at Fort Protector they likewise renamed it Maryborough in deference to the Queen. The name still applied to the local barony, and in its application to this room recalls the peerage granted to William Wellesley-Pole in 1821.
