This charming room is named after the French nobleman, Victor de Massigny. Today, rather fittingly given its French connections, this room is hung with toile de Jouy.

Today, rather fittingly given its French connections, this room is hung with toile de jouy. On each side of the bed are late-eighteenth-century oval mirrors framed with studs of blue and white glass and above the chimneypiece is a tender sibling portrait by the Irish painter Sir Martin Archer Shee, the only Irish-born President of the Royal Academy. The painting by the bed, by contrast, illustrates the mythological world of AE, the poet and artist, George Russell, whose work often shares in the mystic realms of his friend, W.B. Yeats.

The Marquis de Massigny

This charming room is named after the French nobleman, Victor de Massigny.

Victor de Massigny (1807-1889) married Caroline Theodosia, the only daughter of Sir Charles and Lady Caroline Coote in 1842.  He was born in Lyons, and owned a small estate in Nice where the Cootes had a long association and where the couple were married.  After the tragically early death of Caroline in 1848, the Marquis frequently visited Ballyfin where his only daughter was being raised by her grandparents and as an accomplished artist, has left us with a valuable record of the interiors of the house in that period.
